Winter Skin Savers for under $20

Tips to get your best winter skin everHow did it get to be the middle of Winter already?   

It can be super hard to keep our skin looking good in winter.   We have to deal with wind, low humidity, and constantly changing temperatures between outside and inside with the heating.

After spending the last 6 weeks alternating between indoor heating and the freezing cold my skin needs some extra love. so here are my winter skin tips.

1. Hydrate from the inside

It can be hard to remember to drink enough water during the colder months, especially when hot drinks (hot, spiced cider anyone?) is calling our names.

Try to drink at least two litres of water a day and your skin will thank you for it

2. Stop with the hot

There’s nothing quite like a hot shower or bath on a cold winter’s night, but washing in water that is too hot will strip the natural oils from your skin.  Keep your water lukewarm for your best winter skin.  This applies to when you are washing your face too.

3. Double Cleanse at night

At night start with an oil cleanser such as the Muji Cleansing Oil for Sensitive skin (RRP $10.95), which is plant based, and mineral oil free, and massage onto your face.  This will melt away all traces of makeup, and excess oil (sebum) on your skin.   Wet your hands a little and massage your face to emulsify the oil and clean off with warm water.  

Follow up with a gentle, sulfate free cleanser such as Swisse Olive Leaf Gel Cleanser (RRP $9.95) to finish up, and rinse clean with warm water.   Use this product in the morning to start your day fresh and clean.

4. Use a Hyaluronic acid

Hyaluronic acid is an ingredient that is getting to be more common in skincare of recent times, and with good reason.    My choice – Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 from The Ordinary (RRP $17.90) – offers “multi-depth hydration and visible plumping without drawing water out of the skin solely to improve temporary surface hydration” (which is  a fancy way of saying that it leaves my skin feeling soft, not just the outer layer of skin, but truly moisturised deeply.)   Use this both morning and night.

5. Try a Retnoid

Ordinary Advanced Retinoid 2% (RRP $17.90) is a gentle Vitamin-A derivitive that helps to boost collagen (which helps reduce fine lines) and exfoliates (to clear blocked pores, and to help in skin  rejuvenation).   Note though that retinoids should be avoided if you are pregnant, have very sensitive skin or suffer from rosacea.  As it can increase your sensitivity to the sun you should always use sun protection during the day.

6. Moisturise

I am a huge fan of oils for moisturising and recently purchased some facial oils by The Ordinary. I’m using 100% Organic Cold-Pressed Moroccan Argan Oil (RRP $12.90) and 100% Cold-Pressed Virgin Marula Oil (RRP $18.30) which offers antioxidants, hydrates the skin and is claimed to help restore a radiant tone.  Both Argan and Marula oils can be used on skin and hair.   I also adore Jojoba Company Jojoba Oil, which is especially great for the under eye area (you only need the tiniest amount).

Follow this up with a moisturiser, such as Natural Moisturizing Factors + HA (RRP $9.80), again, from The Ordinary for soft smooth skin.

And don’t forget about your body!

7. Dry Brushing

Although the ‘cellulite busting benefits’ of dry brushing is questionable, it does have amazing skin benefits.   Your skin will be exfoliated, and it can help stimulate the lymphatic system which can help eliminate toxins in the body.  Dry brushing also helps to stimulate circulation, giving you a healthy glow. Opt for a natural bristle brush, prices range from $10

Method:

  1. Start at your feet and brush upwards, towards your heart in long, gentle strokes.  Brush each section of skin 10 times or so
  2. Repeat this with your arms, starting at your hands and again moving towards your heart.
  3. On your stomach work in circular strokes, in an anticlockwise direction
  4. Don’t forget your back and butt – a lot of brushes sold for dry brushing come with a long handle to help with the hard to reach areas
  5. This process should take 3-5 minutes, your skin should feel softer and may have a rosy glow, but it should never be scratched or red. You should not dry brush over any irritated or broken skin

Once you have finished brushing have a (lukewarm) shower to clean off your skin and then

8. Moisturise, moisturise, moisturise!!!

I cannot say it enough!!!

My favourite for keeping my skin smooth this winter are Sukin’s Ultra Hydrating Body Oil ($20.95), which contains  a rich blend of botanical oils with Sunflower, Jojoba, Rosehip, Marula Seed, Avocado and Soybean Oils.   This blend smells amazing and works wonderfully when applied straight after showering.  If I am feeling extra dehydrated I use Sukin’s Moisture Rich Body Crème ($15.95), with a few drops of the oil for an extra moisture boost.

It wasn’t until I finished writing this that I realised that my current regime has pretty much been taken over by The Ordinary and Sukin products.  Both are 100% cruelty free, and totally affordable, with almost every product on this list being under $20.   Sukin is available online, and from Chemist Warehouse, and The Ordinary can be purchased online, from Makeup and Glow, or Adore Beauty, and a small selection of their products are available at Myer.

I didn’t get paid to review any of these products (I wish, ha!!!) and I’ve been using all of these products for several months (and purchased them all)
